Movie Review: Valentine's Day

You might be expecting "Valentine's Day", which is pretty much America's version of "Love, Actually" to get another bad review. Well not here. I think that real critics don't look at movies like this as what they are: fun. They're looking for the next big award winner.

Valentine's Day is certainly not going to be picking up any Oscars in 2011, but it really was a cute movie. The ensemble cast was perfect as a whole and just like in Love, Actually, they all came together in the end. Some of the pairings aren't totally expected, though.

My favorite performances were by Anne Hathaway, Queen Latifah, Shirley MacLaine, and Taylor Swift. I'm being totally biased here though, because I love all of them. But that doesn't take away that they're all good comedic actors.

Anne Hathaway says things in this movie you may never expect her to (i.e. "I'm going to like it with my rough little kitty tongue). Queen Latifah is a tough-ass bitch publicist who has some great lines. Shirley MacLaine is adorable, as usual.

Then there's Taylor Swift. You may think she can't carry a tune in a bucket and well sometimes she just can't. But her comedic acting was quite good for her first movie and she'll probably make you laugh.

The gay storyline took too long to work out, though. And seriously, some people in my VERY PACKED theater were reading to shout their prejudices if the guys kissed. Really? IT'S 2010.

Overall, you should see if it you're looking for something light, funny, and cute. It's a good date movie and a good movie to see with your friends.

Grade: B+
